Equipment

  • 1 large skillet
  • 1 - Spatula or wooden spoon
  • 1 Knife
  • 1 Cutting board
  • 1 measuring spoon (for sesame oil, soy sauce, etc.)
  • 1 grater (for ginger, optional)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small head cabbage shredded
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger grated
  • 1 small onion diced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional toppings: fresh herbs sesame seeds

Instructions

  • Brown the Ground Beef: In a large skillet, heat sesame oil over medium heat.
Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spatula, until browned and cooked through (about 5-7 minutes). Drain excess fat and set aside.
  • Sauté the Onions and Garlic: In the same skillet, add a little more sesame oil if needed.
Add diced onion and sauté for 2-3 minutes, until softened.
Add garlic and ginger and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently.
  • Add the Cabbage: Add the shredded cabbage to the skillet. Stir everything to combine and cook for 5-6 minutes, until the cabbage begins to wilt but retains some crunch.
  • Season the Skillet: Stir in soy sauce and black pepper.
Cook for another 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until everything is coated with the sauce and the cabbage is tender.
  • Adjust Seasonings: Taste the dish and adjust with more soy sauce or pepper if necessary.
  • Serve and Enjoy: Remove from heat and serve immediately.
Optionally, top with fresh herbs or sesame seeds for extra flavor and crunch.

Notes

  • For a lighter version: Use lean ground turkey or chicken instead of beef.
  • Add extra vegetables: Feel free to incorporate other vegetables like bell peppers, carrots, or mushrooms to enhance the dish.
  • Spice it up: Add chili flakes, hot sauce, or a diced jalapeño if you prefer a spicy kick.
  • Meal prep: This dish makes great leftovers and stores well in the fridge for up to 3 days. You can also freeze leftovers for up to 2 months.
  • Gluten-free option: Use tamari or coconut aminos in place of soy sauce to keep the dish gluten-free.
