Equipment

  • 1 large pot (for boiling pasta)
  • 1 large baking dish (9x13 inches)
  • 1 medium skillet (for sautéing garlic and sauce)
  • 1 spoon (for stirring)
  • 1 strainer (for draining pasta)
  • 1 measuring cup (for sauce and cheese)
  • 1 spatula (for mixing ingredients)

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ziti pasta
  • 1 jar 24 oz marinara sauce
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • Fresh basil for garnish, optional
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Cook the pasta in a large pot of salted boiling water according to package directions, until al dente (about 9-10 minutes). Drain and set aside.
  • Prepare the sauce: In a medium skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
Add the marinara sauce, garlic powder, oregano, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir to combine and bring to a simmer for 5-7 minutes.
  • Combine the pasta and sauce: In a large bowl, combine the cooked pasta with the marinara sauce, ricotta, and half of the mozzarella cheese. Stir until well combined.
  • Assemble the baked ziti: Pour the pasta mixture into a 9x13-inch baking dish. Top with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the top is golden brown.
  • Garnish with fresh basil if desired and serve hot.

Notes

  • You can make this dish ahead of time by assembling it and refrigerating it until ready to bake. Just add a few extra minutes to the baking time if baking from cold.
  • Feel free to add cooked ground meat (beef, sausage, or chicken) to make the dish heartier.
  • For a vegetarian option, skip the meat and enjoy the dish as-is, or add vegetables like mushrooms, spinach, or bell peppers.
  • This dish can be frozen. Just bake and allow it to cool, then wrap tightly in foil or plastic wrap and freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in the oven before serving.
